Working on a campaign for New York City Council in Brooklyn provided so many amazing and immediate opportunities to learn about the history, cultural makeup and political wrangling in the city’s largest borough. I remember the campaign had asked me to organize a midday coffee meet-and-greet with one of Carroll Garden’s more connected power brokers. Coming from Colorado, I have a pretty neutral accent, so when my event’s host answered the phone, it surprised me that she couldn’t decipher my request.
